Ludwig van Beethoven 1770-1827

Violin Sonatas No. 5 'Spring' & No. 9 'Kreutzer'

Francescatti on violin and Casadesus on piano have a great combination in their 1958 and 1961 recordings on Sony. The sound is fine, and the playing is both emotional and musical. The recording is now out of print, but may still be available. For a classic 1973 recording, Ashkenazy and Perlman are the way to go with these two works. Highly recommended. If you would like a recording of all 10 Sonatas, Seemann (Piano) and Schneiderhan (Violin) on the DG Trio series is a great bargain, and the performances are very good.

Piano Sonatas

Beethoven's piano sonatas recordings come in various combinations, but the most famous are the Moonlight, Pathetique, Appassionata and Waldstein. Rudolf Serkin performs Moonlight, Pathetique, Appassionata & No. 30 Sonatas in a newly packaged Sony 'Art of Interpretation' CD. William Kempff adds the Waldstein in his DG disc of four sonatas. Horowitz gives us the Appassionata, Moonlight & Waldstein on RCA. You really cannot go wrong with any of these combinations. For a bargain set of the complete sonatas, Bernard Roberts has an 11 CD set on Nimbus for under $35.

Beethoven PortraitMusic History 102: Beethoven

Beethoven's life: a chronology

Beethoven's body of works is massive, so this list is simply a starting point, and I have focused on my favorites. His most famous works fall into the categories of symphonies, sonatas, chamber music, and concertos. The piano concertos and symphonies are available in sets, along with individual recordings of each work. A complete list of recommended recordings for each of these works is on a separate page. Below are essential selections from Beethoven's other works. You can also proceed to the Symphony and Piano Concerto[soon] category pages for more selections and info.
