When it comes
to the piano music of Chopin, you cannot do better than
Artur Rubinstein. His mastery of these works is beyond compare, and RCA
has done a wonderful job at remastering his older recordings for CD. There
are may sets, single CDs and compilations of Rubinstein/Chopin music, but
listed are a few of my favorites. All are mid-priced, and the sound quality
is from good to great. If you want to try other recordings, stick with the
ones from RCA since the cheaper CDs seem to be really old recordings from
the 1930s and 40s.
For Chopin's orchestral works, here are two bargains. Ormandy with Ax
at the piano have a great CD of the Two Piano Concertos. Great performances
at a rock bottom price. Beissel and the Hamburg SO give nice performances
of Chopin's works for Piano and Orchestra in this VoxBox 2CD set. Included
are the Concertos and four other works.
