A
nice CD is a budget compilation of older recordings from the 60s, and a personal
favorite from the old CBS Great Performances
series. Bernstein's Grand Canyon is the better sounding of the
two, but the Mississippi Suite is a decent recording. It is out of
print but still available, and the Kostelanetz 'Mississippi' will probably
be deleted from the Sony catalog, so buy it now if you want it. The same Grand
Canyon performance is also available on a Bernstein Century CD,
with Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. Since
Gershwin and Grofe are often coupled together,
Dorati also performs Grand Canyon along with Gershwin's Porgy
and Bess Suite.
