The
Planets
is a suite in seven parts, each named for a planet in our solar system. Earth
is not named, and Pluto had not been discovered at the time Planets was composed.
This recording by Karajan and the Berliner Philharmonic is a great
performance and has demonstration-class sound.
Holst also composed some great works for Chorus and Orchestra, but it is hard
to find any on CD. The Morning Of The Year choral ballet is a gem,
and the only currently available recording is on Hyperion by Wetton and
the Philharmonia Orchestra. It also includes the Golden Goose and King
Estmere.
The Mystic Trumpeter is another virtually unknown but great work, and
is on the Naxos disc with The Planets, along with Colin Matthews
extra 'Pluto' composition.
In an altogether different catagory is Tomita's realization of The Planets. A totally synthesized performance from the 1970's, it is an intriguing exploration into the textures and dynamics of Holst's work. Definitely worth a listen, especially if you are a Wendy Carlos fan.
