Symphony No. 5 shines with playing from Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra on Sony in their classic performance. Unfortunately, my favorite recording by Slatkin and the St. Louis Symphony on RCA seems to have been discontinued, coupled with the composer's Symphony No. 1. However, the super bargain VoxBox is available by Slatkin, and it is a real winner. The CD contains the music for various films that Prokofiev scored, including Ivan The Terrible, Alexander Nevsky and Lieutenant Kizheh [or Kije]. At under $10 for 2 CD's, this is a safe bet.
Prokofiev's
Romeo and Juliet Ballet has various recordings of different sections,
but Solti and the Chicago SO have a nice selection, and the CD comes
with 'Classical' Symphony No. 1. For the complete ballet, Maazel and the
Cleveland Orchestra have an excellent 2CD set on London.
Philips Duo comes in again with a great 2 CD midprice set, featuring various
works, along with Peter and The Wolf, and the Love for Three Oranges
Suite.
