Music History 102: Schubert

Essentials Of Music: Schubert

Schubert is a composer whose works start in the Classical Era and ends in the Romantic Era, so his compositions are a good example of how music styles of the period were changing.

The works of Schubert that are the most famous are his Symphony 8 'Unfinished' and Symphony 9 'The Great'. The 9th from Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra dates from 1959, but you would hardly know the difference. Coupled with the 8th, this is a must-have disk. [UPDATE: This recording seems to be out of print at the moment, hopefully Sony will reissue it later]. For another version of the same era, try Bohm and the Berlin PO on DG. This 2 CD set also conatins Symph 8 along with other works.
If you are looking for a version of the 8th with a different work, you cannot go wrong with Kleiber's recording with Symphony 3. This is another definitive recording, and also a wonderful addition to your collection. Both are mid-priced CDs.
