My
personal favorite Shostakovich piece is Symphony 5 performed by
Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra on RCA. Unfortunately, the work
never made it to CD, but if you ever come across the album, get it. Something
about the performance keeps me listening to the album time and time again.
It is probably my favorite classical vinyl LP. The performance on Sony records
which is available on CD is not in the same league, however, and is
not recommended.
Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic give a strong reading, and is coupled
with Symphony No. 9. For a low price alternative, the Skrowaczewski
may be worth a try.
